Background and aims: Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn) are also known to exhibit systemic involvement such as in the biliary system, joints and the eyes. Recently, case reports and a few clinical investigations were released demonstrating the relationship between ulcerative colitis and thyroid diseases. We aimed to investigate thyroid hormone levels in patients with ulcerative colitis in this study. Materials antd Methods: Twenty-five patients diagnosed as ulcerative colitis between 2004-2007 in our clinic and 32 healthy controls without ulcerative colitis were included in the study. The patients were evaluated with respect to the parameters of age, gender, site of involvement of ulcerative colitis, duration of the disease and its activation. Results: Of the total 25 ulcerative colitis patients, 12 were women, 13 were men and their mean ages were 31.75 ± 14.23 and 34 ± 9.40, respectively. The control group included 19 women and 13 men (mean ages: 34.52 ± 10.16 and 34.53 ± 9.99, respectively). The levels of FT3 and FT4 were detected as normal in both groups. When evaluated according to thyroid stimulating hormone levels, two (8%) subclinical hyperthyroidism cases were diagnosed in the study group, and two (6%) subclinical hyperthyroidism and one (3%) subclinical hypothyroidism cases were detected in the control group. However, no statistical difference was found between these rates. Conclusions: In conclusion, further studies with larger patient numbers that also evaluate autoantibodies are essential.
